Often you dont know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory
Someone told me recently to savour the good times here because they are fleeting, I was sort of dismissive because I feel like I do this anyway but I held it fresh in mind recently when I came to understand exactly what he meant with regard to ship life. A lot of people are leaving the ship before we leave asia, recently I realised that we were having a change of crew on a show, and that an inside joke we had was likely to be lost. There's a scene change where I am stood opposite side of the stage from two of my colleagues and there's a “sexy snake” dance going on centre stage, we are all standing in the wings facing each other ready to take the props off, a few shows back I started dancing to the girl opposite and then her and a guy we work with would dance back and it cracks me up every time, this time even the production manager joined in from the floor above, I was in stitches laughing. Then I realised the girl leaves in 11 days and the guy is training up for another department so I'm going to be working with a totally different set of people and I wasn't sure that I'd have this type of humour with them, so suddenly the savouring made sense to me. A few really good friends have left the ship and I really feel their absence, but then new people join and it's a completely different atmosphere with its own set of positives. This got me thinking about the guests and the way they try to make the most of their time here and remember the experience. People on board here film everything, I often watch them and wonder if this a personal memory thing or to share, I saw someone filming the shops the other day and questioned if they would do that at home, and what they would have to say about it watching back. Incidentally there's a very interesting mentality on this ship, guests here will treat anything as entertainment because they are expecting to be entertained, I used to have a similar theory running tech at comedy shows, people turn up expecting to laugh so they laugh. Recently some guests sat at the back of our training room and watched the whole thing through, the trainer only realised that these people were in the wrong room when they took out cameras at the end and started photographing everything. Also had a really awkward morning where I was driving the Zamboni to make ice and a load of guests came and sat down, I had my music playing so they thought it was a show, once you start driving this thing you have to keep going so I just had to bear it, super awkward though, there's a reason I chose a life backstage and I didn't anticipate this. Only a few days left till we leave our usual route through Asia, I'm going to miss it, some of these ports feel really familiar now and I enjoy spending time in them, so many new places coming up now though, on my way to India, Greece and Spain, lots to look forward to.
